Study finds growing divide in Swedish healthcare utilization by income - News-Medical.Net

Image
Swedish people with the lowest incomes utilize primary and outpatient care on par with those with the highest incomes despite having significantly higher mortality rates, according to a new study published November 16 th in the open access journal PLOS Medicine by Pär Flodin of Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, and colleagues. Socioeconomic differences in healthcare utilization have persisted in modern welfare states even with universal healthcare. In recent decades, Sweden has witnessed a rise in income inequalities, accompanied by shifts in the sociodemographic composition of the population and transformations of the healthcare system. In the new study, researchers linked data on income and sociodemographic to data on utilization of primary, outpatient, and inpatient care, as well as to mortality for all Swedish individuals over the age of 16 from 2004 through 2017. For all years of the study, people in the lowest income quantile utilized marginally more primary care (OR

Another Ebola Vaccine Found Safe and Effective — Precision Vaccinations News - Precision Vaccinations

Image
(Precision Vaccinations News) Vaccines to protect people against Zaire Ebolavirus outbreaks have been used during outbreaks over the past few years. According to the World Health Organization, two Ebola vaccines are available in 2024. A recent study has confirmed that the prime-boost Ebola vaccine regimen is safe and effective for children and adults. This phase 2 study assessed the long-term immunogenicity of the MVA-BN-Filo vaccine regimen and the safety of an immune memory response to an Ad26.ZEBOV booster vaccination. These researchers concluded, in a paper published on March 26, 2024, that the vaccine regimen and booster dose were well tolerated. These researchers wrote that a similar and robust humoral immune response was observed for participants boosted one year and two years after the first dose, supporting the use of the regimen and flexibility of booster dose administration for prophylactic vaccination in at-risk populations. The other recommended Ebola v

Estimated Flu Illnesses, Medical Visits, and Hospitalizations Prevented by Vaccination in the United States — 2019 ... - CDC

Image
This web page provides estimates on the burden of influenza (flu) and the effects of annual flu vaccination in the United States for the 2019–2020 flu season. While previous updates to the prevented burden estimates for the 2019-2020 season included preliminary input data, this update provides the final estimates for flu vaccine prevented burden for the 2019-2020 season. For the past several years, CDC has used a model to estimate the numbers of flu illnesses, medical visits, hospitalizations, and deaths and has also estimated the effect of flu vaccination on these outcomes in the United States (1-6). The methods used to calculate the estimates have been described previously (1,2,6). CDC uses the estimates of the impact of flu vaccination to inform policy and communications promoting influenza vaccination as the best way to prevent flu. 2019–2020 Estimates of Burden Prevented by Flu Vaccination CDC estimates that during the 2019–2020 season 36 million people were ill, 16 million pe

Athlete's Foot: Take These Precautions to Reduce Your Chances of Catching Athlete's Foot - Yahoo Singapore News

Image
SCHAUMBURG, IL--(Marketwired - Apr 22, 2014) - Despite the name, athlete's foot can happen to anyone. It is a common fungal infection that most people get from walking barefoot in moist public places like a swimming pool deck or locker room. Athlete's foot can result in flaky skin, cracking and itchiness on the soles of the foot and between the toes. "If you think you have athlete's foot, consider using an anti-fungal cream you can buy at your drugstore," said dermatologist Jeffrey V. Benabio, MD, FAAD, Kaiser Permanente, San Diego. Dr. Benabio recommends the following precautions for reducing your chance of catching athlete's foot: Wear shower shoes, flip flops, or sandals when walking around pools, gyms, shower or locker areas, and hotel rooms. The fungus that causes athlete's foot may be on the floor. Even when taking a shower in a gym, it is important to wear shower shoes or flip flops. Even if you have not gone barefoot in public areas, keep your fee

Don't Stop Believin': This year's HIV vaccine research theme - IAVI

Image
The titles of HIV vaccine sessions at scientific conferences tend to epitomize the current sentiments of the field. Over the years these session titles have on occasion conveyed optimism, while at other junctures communicated a more dire call for a "back to basics" approach. But most often, following a series of disappointing results from clinical trials, these session titles described a field at a crossroads. That is no longer the case. Researchers in the HIV vaccine field have largely coalesced around what they think will be required to achieve a preventive vaccine. Now, innovation and perseverance are providing reason for hope, which is likely why this year's main vaccine session at the 24th annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) was entitled, The HIV Vaccine Journey: Don't Stop Believin' . Apart from the clever reference to an American rock band's hit song, this session title accurately portrays today&

Influenza Antiviral Medications: Summary for Clinicians | CDC - CDC

Image
In October 2019, FDA approved an indication for baloxavir treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza within 2 days of illness onset in people 12 years and older at high risk of developing influenza-related complications, based upon the findings of a clinical trial (Ison, 2020). In this clinical trial of early initiation of antiviral treatment for uncomplicated influenza in highrisk patients, baloxavir was superior to placebo and had similar overall efficacy to oseltamivir in the time to alleviation of symptoms. For patients with influenza B virus infection, baloxavir significantly reduced the median time to improvement of symptoms compared with oseltamivir by more than 24 hours. For patients with influenza B virus infection, baloxavir significantly reduced the median time to improvement of symptoms compared with oseltamivir by more than 24 hours. However, there are no available data for baloxavir treatment of influenza in pregnant people, immunocompromised people, or in people with sev

A Closer Look Into Cryptococcal Fungal Infections - Texas A&M Today - Texas A&M University Today

A 3D illustration of Cryptococcus neoformans Getty Images Allowing pets to roam outdoors can seem like harmless fun, providing them with exercise, mental stimulation, and a chance to explore. Some environments, however, pose hidden dangers that pet owners may not immediately recognize, such as the risk of cryptococcal fungal infections — which can infect the lungs, brain, and other parts of the body. Dr. Sara Lawhon, director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory for the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, provides insight into this type of fungal infection and why pet owners should be aware of the potential harm it poses to their pets — and especially cats. Susceptibility And Signs Cryptococcal fungal infections are caused by the Cryptococcus species of fungi, most commonly Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii . These fungi are most naturally found in warm and humid environments,

Rubella Screening in Pregnancy No Longer Recommended in Italy - Medscape

Image
If a pregnant woman contracts rubella in the first 17 weeks of pregnancy, then the risk for congenital rubella in the newborn — which may entail spontaneous abortion, intrauterine death, or severe fetal malformations — is as high as 80%. This risk once frightened patients and clinicians in Italy. Thanks to widespread population vaccination, however, the World Health Organization declared the elimination of endemic transmission of rubella in Italy in 2021. The Italian National Institute of Health took note, and the recent update of the Guidelines for the Management of Physiological Pregnancy no longer recommends offering rubella screening to all pregnant women. The Rubeo Test The rubeo test, an analysis for detecting antibodies in the blood produced by vaccination or a past rubella infection, traditionally forms part of the examination package that every doctor prescribes to expectant patients at the beginning of pregnancy. If the test shows that the woman is not vaccinated and has neve

Flu shot: Doctors recommend Fluzone High-Dose, FLUAD for 65 and older - USA TODAY

Flu season is upon us, and the demographic most vulnerable to the disease is people 65 and older. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 70%-80% of seasonal flu-related deaths occur in this age group.   The regular flu vaccine just won't cut it, some doctors say. James Steckelberg of the Mayo Clinic said people 65 and over should be administered high-dose vaccines to stimulate their immune system.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has licensed two high-dose vaccines to people 65 and older: Fluzone High-Dose and FLUAD. What are Fluzone High-Dose and FLUAD?  Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said that although the two vaccines have the same outcome, they work a little differently. Fluzone High-Dose contains four times the antigen that's in a standard dose, effectively making it a stronger version of the regular fl

Can I Take This Cold Medication With That One? - Verywell Health

Image
While doubling up on cold and flu medicines like Sudafed and Dayquil may seem like a good idea—hitting symptoms hard for faster relief—doing so poses certain harms if you are not careful. This includes overdosing on medications used in both medicines, which not only increases the risk of side effects but might also end up injuring your liver and other organs. As a general rule, most multi-symptom cold & flu medicines should not be taken with other multi-symptom cold and flu medicines. If taking a single-symptom medication (like aspirin), you need to be sure that you don't take it with a drug of the same class (like Advil). Speak with your pharmacist or healthcare provider if you are not sure. This article lists 12 different over-the-counter (OTC) drugs commonly used to treat cold and flu symptoms and explains which can be taken together and which cannot. RSV in Infants and Young Children | CDC - CDC

Image
CDC recommends you use one of these two tools to protect your baby from getting very sick with RSV: Most infants will not need both. RSV Vaccines for Pregnant People An RSV vaccine is recommended for those who are 32-36 weeks pregnant during September through January in most of the continental United States. Some areas, where RSV season is slightly different, may have adjustments to the months when RSV vaccine is recommended. RSV Immunization for Babies RSV antibodies can help protect babies and young children from severe disease from an RSV infection. They provide an extra layer of defense that helps fight RSV infections and protect children from getting very sick. The protection these antibodies provide wanes over time.  A preventive antibody is not a treatment for a child who already has RSV infection. RSV antibody immunization is recommended for all infants who are younger than 8 months, born during or entering their first RSV season. Most infants whose mothers

Drug-resistant ringworm: CDC says at least 2 cases found in U.S. - NBC News

Image
Two cases of highly contagious, drug-resistant ringworm infections have been detected in New York City — the first such cases reported in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday. The infection was first identified in a 47-year-old woman who had developed a bad case of ringworm, also known as tinea, while traveling in Bangladesh. A rash had erupted across most of her body and typical antifungal creams did nothing to alleviate it. "My radar went up immediately," said Dr. Avrom Caplan, an assistant professor of dermatology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, who treated the patient and was one of the report's authors. The woman's infection turned out to be caused by a relatively new species of ringworm-causing fungus, called Trichophyton indotineae . Over the past decade, infections from this drug-resistant fungus have spread rapidly in South Asia, likely driven by overuse of medications to treat them, including topical antifungals and

Athlete's foot to nail fungus: Beware of these 7 fungal infections in monsoon - Hindustan Times

Image
By Parmita Uniyal , New Delhi Jul 22, 2023 04:43 PM IST From itchy skin to vaginal yeast infections, a host of dermatological issues can affect skin health in the monsoon season. Rainy season provides much-needed respite from sultry summers, but it also brings a flood of fungal infections. Besides causing new health issues they also cause flare-up in existing conditions especially those related to skin. The humid air and less of sunshine make it an ideal environment for various types of fungal infections to grow. Due to persistent moisture in the air, the skin always has a layer of sweat, which makes it vulnerable to a range of fungal diseases. Skin between the toes, groin area, inner thighs, buttocks and even eyes can get affected amid the onslaught of rainy season fungal infections. From itchy skin to vaginal yeast infections, a host of dermatological issues can affect skin health and may require medical intervention. (Also read: 7 personal items you sho
