Where to Get a Free Flu Shot Right Now—With or Without Insurance - Health.com

Image
Quick question: Have you gotten your flu shot yet? If your answer is "yes," good for you; carry on. If your answer is "no," what are you waiting for? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age six months and older (with just a few exceptions) should get a flu shot before the end of October. That's because the flu season typically begins in October and starts to peak in December—and it takes several weeks to develop full immunity from the shot, according to the CDC. Getty Images Once you get that flu shot, it'll last you about six months, Vanessa Raabe, MD, pediatric infectious disease specialist at NYU Langone Health, told Health —which means the flu shot you got last year most definitely won't give you any protection for this year's flu season. Plus, the CDC says that the flu vaccine changes from year to year as scientists try to predict which strains of the virus will be dominant.

A Covid-19 reflection: Incorporating what we've learned for improved preparedness - MedCity News

Image
More than two years since the U.S. was hit with the first wave of Covid-19, many of us in the fields of science and medicine have stopped at one point or another to reflect on our collective response, even as we continue to battle the virus and its new variants. CDC's collaborative approach that recognizes the interconnection between humans, animals, plants and their environments, known as One Health, has gained greater currency as the world has lived the effect of the cross-species transmission of Covid-19. As changing climates impact human, animal and plant habitats and spur ecological transitions, our global risk of cross-species transmissions, or zoonotic disease, and the resulting future pandemics becomes even greater. The World Health Organization predicts pandemics will, "emerge more often [and] spread more rapidly…" in future years. It is critical that global government policies support One Health initiatives that promote biodiversity and conservation to pr

When COVID-19 or flu viruses kill, they often have an accomplice – bacterial infections - PhillyVoice.com

The 1918 influenza pandemic resulted in the loss of over 3% of the world's population – at least 50 million people. But it wasn't the flu virus that caused the majority of these deaths. An analysis of lung samples collected during that flu pandemic indicated that most of the deaths were likely due to bacterial pneumonia, which ran rampant in the absence of antibiotics. Even in more recent history, like the 1957 H2N2 and 2009 H1N1 flu pandemics, nearly 18% of patients with viral pneumonia had additional bacterial infections that increased their risk of death. And the COVID-19 pandemic is no different. With yet another flu season fast approaching in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, lessening the harm caused by these viruses is important to prevent deaths and reduce infections. However, many deaths associated with the flu and COVID-19 don't occur at the hand of the virus alone. Instead, it's a secondary bacterial infection that is often at the root of the deva

Afghanistan was in freefall. Word had spread that "the Americans and NATO were leaving—forever."  Former government workers, security force members, or anybody who worked with coalition forces were at risk, but Afghan Special Operations Forces were in the most danger as they had done most of the fighting in Afghanistan in recent years as the regular army and police forces faded away in the face of Taliban mind games and violence. Effect of Different Polio Immunization Programs on Hepatitis A, B Vaccine Efficacy - Infectious Disease Advisor

Image
Different types of sequential polio immunization programs were found to have no effect on the efficacy of vaccines for Hepatitis A virus (HAV) or Hepatitis B virus (HBV), according to study findings published in Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics . Healthy infants (N=968) from China were enrolled in this randomized, double-blinded, single-center, parallel arm trial that assessed the effects of 6 different sequential polio immunization programs on the efficacy of HAV and HBV vaccines. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 fashion into 6 vaccine groups and underwent vaccination with 6 different combinations of inactivated and oral vaccines. Participants received the polio vaccines at 2, 3, and 4 months of age; the HBV vaccines at zero, 1, and 6 months of age; and the HAV live-attenuated vaccine at 18 months of age. The researchers assessed HAV and HBV vaccine efficacy via anti-HAV antibody measurements and HBV surface antibody (HBsAb) measurements, respecti

For Children with Colds, Doctors are Increasingly Likely to Recommend Antihistamines Rather than Cough and Cold Medicine - Rutgers University

Image
Rutgers study finds increase in antihistamine use for colds, following the 2008 FDA advisory to decrease use of cough and cold medicines, despite risks and unclear benefit of antihistamines for children with colds Antihistamines are widely used over-the-counter to treat various allergic conditions. However, these medicines have little known benefit for children with colds and can cause sedation and occasionally agitation in children.   For respiratory infections in children under 12, physicians are increasingly more likely to recommend antihistamines and less likely to recommend cough and cold medicines, a Rutgers study found. Antihistamines are widely used over-the-counter to treat various allergic conditions. However, these medicines have little known benefit for children with colds, and some older antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine or Benadryl) cause sedation and occasionally agitation in children. The study, in JAMA Pediatrics , found a sharp decline in cou

Risk factors of dermatophytosis among Korean adults | Scientific Reports - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Dermatophytosis includes all fungal infections caused by dermatophytes in humans. Some risk factors for the development of subtypes of dermatophytosis have been studied; however, large-scale epidemiologic studies on risk factors for total dermatophytosis are scarce. We investigated the risk factors of dermatophytosis using a nationwide study. Total 4,532,655 subjects with dermatophytosis aged between 20 and 40 years were examined using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service from 2009 to 2018. Women showed a lower risk of development of dermatophytosis compared to men [hazard ratio (HR) 0.848; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.843–0.853]. Subjects with elevated waist circumference (HR 1.057; 95% CI 1.048–1.065), heavy drinking (HR 1.053; 95% CI 1044–1.061), engaging in mild-to-heavy exercise (HR 1.071; 95% CI 1.064–1.077) had a higher risk of dermatophytosis. In addition, subjects with body mass index (BMI) of more than 30 kg/m 2 exhibited a high
