Central Ohio Primary Care opens Altair Medical Building along Westerville's 'Medical Mile' - The Columbus Dispatch

An $18 million, 100,000-square-foot Altair Medical Building has opened in the Central Ohio Primary Care main campus on the 600 block of Africa Road in Westerville.

COPC officials said the new building, which is in the back of the campus with an address of 400 Altair Parkway, includes a central laboratory, multiple medical practices and an Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center ear, nose and throat practice. The Altair Building is expected to provide the medical needs of more than 50,000 adult and pediatric patients, according to an Oct. 11 news release from COPC.

"The new Altair Medical Building allows Central Ohio Primary Care to bring more practices onto our campus and into close proximity to our ancillary services," said Dr. Bill Wulf, COPC CEO. "This creates value for our patients, payers and providers."

Construction on the building began in 2020 and, although slowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, was completed in 16 months, the release said. Its opening completes the COPC Westerville main campus, constructed for $45 million, according to the release from the company, which calls itself the largest independent physician-owned primary-care group in the United States.

"Having COPC headquartered here in Westerville and growing is exactly what we envisioned for the city and led to our designation as one of the most quality destinations to find health care," City Manager Monica Irelan said. "It's known as the Medical Mile, and now COPC is an anchor along the corridor from Cleveland Avenue to Polaris Parkway that is lined with hospitals, specialty practices and physician groups.

"The Medical Mile (is) part of our own city branding for excellence in health-care services," she said. "The 'Mile' is known across the region that Ohioans statewide seeking quality health care need to come to Westerville."

The Altair building, referred to as AMB, includes a new state-of-the-art central laboratory. This 11,500-square-foot laboratory enables COPC to expand its internal testing capabilities for the benefit of patients and practices, said Mike Ashanin, COPC chief operations officer.

"The new facility is anchored by COPC's in-house laboratory, which will process over 2 million tests annually," Ashanin said. "It is also the home of the Pediatric Support Center, which will see patients until 10 p.m. There are two adult primary-care practices, one pediatric office and two specialist offices located in the building."

The AMB is the capstone of a project that was started in 2016, the COPC release said. The first building to open was the company's Central Business Office at 655 Africa Road, followed by the COPC Medical Center, which opened at 625 Africa Road in 2018.

"The AMB, along with the sister buildings on the campus, have solidified Westerville as the hub for both our clinical and business operations," Ashanin said. "This will be our primary campus for seven-day-a-week extended care. Nearly everything we offer here is to support our commitment to population health, the essence of our mission."

The new building includes COPC practices Westerville Family Physicians, Northside Medical Associates, Endocrinology Specialists, River's Edge Pediatrics and Pediatric Support Center.
