How Do You Treat Toenail Fungus? - The New York Times

Image
Q: It looks like I have fungus beneath my toenail, but how can I be sure? Does toenail fungus go away on its own? Yellowing, brittle and unusual-looking toenails can be a sign that a fungal nail infection, called onychomycosis, has taken root. Experts say these infections don't go away on their own and can easily spread from person to person without treatment. "Fungus tends to be greedy," said Dr. Boni Elewski, chair of the department of dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. If you pick it up from close contact with someone who is infected or by walking barefoot in a locker room, for instance, it can then crawl under your toenail and spread into the nail itself, she said. Wearing moist, sweaty shoes can encourage the fungus to grow. Toenail fungus affects an estimated one in 10 people worldwide, and becomes more common with age — afflicting more than half of those ages 70 and up. People with diabetes or weakened immune systems are also susceptible, said ...

H5N1 bird flu genetic sequences released by USDA - STAT - STAT

Image
T he U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has been under pressure from scientists both at home and abroad to share more data on the H5N1 bird flu outbreaks in dairy cows, uploaded a large number of genetic sequences of the pathogen late Sunday. The excitement that news generated in the scientific community quickly gave way to frustration, though, when researchers who tried to start analyzing the sequences realized the files did not include any information about when the samples that generated the data were collected, or where.  The expectation that the sequence data could help determine if the H5N1 virus has been changing as it transmitted from cow to cow and herd to herd gave way to a realization that it would do nothing of the sort. "The sequences — they just all look like the [original] Texas sequences," said Tom Peacock, a flu virologist at Imperial College, London. "For all we know, they are all the [original] Texas sequences." "The only ...

2023-2024 U.S. Flu Season: Preliminary In-Season Burden Estimates | CDC - CDC

Image
Each week CDC calculates a lower estimate and an upper estimate of flu-related hospitalizations that have occurred since the beginning of the season (October 1, 2023). These are updated each week and are compared to end-of-season estimates of flu-related hospitalizations from previous flu seasons. Limitations The estimates of the preliminary, cumulative burden of seasonal influenza are subject to several limitations: The cumulative rate of lab-confirmed flu-related hospitalizations reported during the season may be an underestimate of the rate at the end of the season because of identification and reporting delays. Rates of lab-confirmed flu-related hospitalizations are adjusted for the frequency of flu testing and the sensitivity of flu diagnostic assays. However, data on testing practices during the current flu season are not available in real-time. To make these estimates, CDC uses data on testing practices from the past flu seasons as a proxy. If more testing is being don...

Prevention and Control of Seasonal Influenza with Vaccines ... - CDC

Image
Recommendations for the Use of Influenza Vaccines, 2023–24 Groups Recommended for Vaccination Routine annual influenza vaccination of all persons aged ≥6 months who do not have contraindications continues to be recommended. Influenza vaccines expected to be available for the 2023–24 season, their age indications, and their presentations are described (Table 1). Available influenza vaccines and age indications are expected to be similar to those of the 2022–23 season. Recommendations regarding timing of vaccination, considerations for specific populations, the use of specific vaccines, and contraindications and precautions are summarized in the sections that follow. Timing of Vaccination Because timing of the onset, peak, and decline of influenza activity varies the ideal time to start vaccinating cannot be predicted each season. Decisions about timing necessitate balancing considerations regarding this unpredictability of the influenza season, possible waning of vaccine-induced...
