Tioconazole vs Miconazole: What Are the Differences? - Verywell Health

Image
Tioconazole and miconazole are both anti-fungal medications. They both help treat certain fungal infections by breaking down the fungi structure. Without the basic fungal structure, the fungi can not survive on its own. Both tioconazole and miconazole help treat vaginal yeast infections. However, miconazole can also be used for other types of fungal infections, such as oral thrush, athlete's foot, ringworm, or jock itch. This article will help you understand the similarities and differences between tioconazole and miconazole.  Getty Images / Maskot What Are Tioconazole and Miconazole? Tioconazole and miconazole are medications belonging to a drug class called imidazole antifungals. They are used to treat different types of fungal infections. How climate change could make fungal diseases worse - Knowable Magazine

Image
Back at the turn of the 21st century, Valley fever was an obscure fungal disease in the United States, with fewer than 3,000 reported cases per year, mostly in California and Arizona. Two decades later, cases of Valley fever are exploding, increasing more than sevenfold and expanding to other states. And Valley fever isn't alone. Fungal diseases in general are appearing in places they have never been seen before, and previously harmless or mildly harmful fungi are turning deadly for people. One likely reason for this worsening fungal situation, scientists say, is climate change. Shifts in temperature and rainfall patterns are expanding where disease-causing fungi occur; climate-triggered calamities can help fungi disperse and reach more people; and warmer temperatures create opportunities for fungi to evolve ...

Employment vs Private Practice: Who's Happier? - Medscape

Alexandra Kharazi, MD, a California-based cardiothoracic surgeon, previously worked as an employed physician and is now in private practice. Though she appreciates that there are some trade-offs to working with her small group of three surgeons, Kharazi has no qualms about her choice. "For me, it's an issue of autonomy," she said. "While I have to work a lot of hours, I don't have to adhere to a strict schedule. I also don't have to follow specific policies and rules." In contrast, Cassandra Boduch, MD, an employed psychiatrist with PsychPlus in Houston, Texas, is very satisfied with working as an employee. "I looked into private practice, but no one really prepares you for the complications that come with it," she said. "There's a lot more that goes into it than people realize." By hanging up her own shingle, Kharazi m...

Inflammation in severe COVID linked to excess gut fungi - Nature.com

The yeast Candida albicans can play a part in regulating the immune system. Credit: Eye Of Science/SPL An imbalance of fungi in the gut could contribute to excessive inflammation in people with severe COVID-19 or long COVID. A study found that individuals with severe disease had elevated levels of a fungus that can activate the immune system and induce long-lasting changes. The work, published on 23 October in Nature Immunology 1 , raises the possibility that antifungal treatment could provide some relief to people who are critically ill with COVID-19. "We know inflammation is driving severe disease," says Martin Hönigl, a clinical mycology researcher at the Medical University of Graz in Austria, who was not involved in the study. This work, he says, provides a potential mechanism of disease-causing inflammation that might have been overlooked. Inflammation insights Trillions of microorganisms live in and on our bodies, helping us to digest food, ...
