Tell us: Did your health worsen while you struggled to find a primary ... - The Boston Globe

Image
A growing number of doctors are leaving the field, as demand for health care grows in Massachusetts. As a result, many people have struggled to find new doctors for essential well visits. Others say they cannot get in to see their existing primary care physicians or access specialists. Have you experienced a problem accessing a primary care doctor, pediatrician, or specialist? Has that delay resulted in worsening health, an exacerbation of your health issue, or delays in obtaining signed school health forms? Please tell us about your experience. Milwaukee Health Services, Inc., the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Health and Children's Wisconsin announced today plans to develop a new family medicine residency on Milwaukee's northwest side. The North Side Milwaukee Health Centers Family Medicine Residency draws support from its designation as Wisconsin's first Teaching Health Center. THC programs receive federal funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration and aid primary care residency training programs in underserved communities. The new residency will bring more family physicians to the area, hard hit by current health care workforce shortages, said Stephanie Harrison, CEO of the Wisconsin Primary Health Care Association, in a press release. "(The residency) also works to diversify that workforce to be more reflective of the communities they serve, which is known to improve health outcomes for under-resourced comm...

Norovirus symptoms: Do you think you have the 'stomach flu?' - AL.com

Image
Norovirus – known by names such as "stomach flu" or "stomach bug" – is making the rounds in Alabama. Cases of the highly contagious stomach bug are up roughly 30% over last year, with 225 outbreaks of norovirus reported between Aug. 1, 2022 and Jan. 18, 2023. It is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea from acute gastroenteritis, or inflammation of the stomach and intestines, among people of all ages in the U.S. And while it is referred to as "stomach flu," norovirus has nothing to do with influenza, which has mostly respiratory symptoms. Norovirus is spread through contaminated foods, liquids, surfaces, or people with the virus. Anyone is susceptible to norovirus but it can be particularly dangerous for the very young or old. It can also be found in vomit or feces of infected people, making hand washing even more important, the CDC said. The most common symptoms of norovirus are: diarrhea vomiting nausea stomach pain Other symptoms include: fever hea...

Survey Shows Many Americans Still Uncertain About Getting Flu Shots - Pharmacy Times

Image
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have encouraged Americans to get a flu shot, however, fewer than half of people in a nationwide survey reported getting the seasonal immunization (49%), according to data from the Annenberg Science Knowledge (ASK) survey for the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) of the University of Pennsylvania. This was not statistically significant compared to findings from the 2021 and 2022 surveys. "[And] although the CDC indicated that seasonal flu activity is now low nationally, the fact that the level of reported flu vaccination in our panel was roughly the same in January of this year as a year before is concerning," said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, in a recent press release. In January 2023, a sample of 1600 nationally diverse US adults were asked to fill out the ASK survey so investigators could gain a general understanding about the areas of concern and uncertainty about flu sho...

Pneumococcal Vaccine: Types, Schedule, and Side Effects - Verywell Health

Image
Pneumococcal vaccines are the most effective way to protect yourself or your child against pneumococcal disease, including ear infections, pneumonia (lung infection), blood infection, and meningitis (infection of the brain lining). These vaccines are not the same as a flu vaccine. Pneumococcal vaccines protect against a type of bacteria, not a virus such as the flu. Many babies or young children now get the recommended pneumococcal vaccine series. It is also recommended for all adults age 65 and older who are not known to have previously received a pneumococcal vaccine. People under age 65 may need vaccination if there is no record of the vaccination or if they have a medical condition that increases their risk of pneumococcal disease. This article will discuss pneumococcal disease, the available vaccines, side effects, and more. According to Medical Guidelines, Your Doctor Needs a 27-Hour Workday - The New York Times

Image
Some doctors say that however reasonable guidelines may seem, their cumulative burden causes "constant frustration" to medical practice. The intent is admirable: Give doctors guidelines so they can be sure to cover what needs to be discussed with patients and help select options. Let's talk about your diet and any problems you might have sleeping. Are you getting enough exercise? If not, here is some advice. You are due for colon cancer screening. Do you prefer a colonoscopy or a fecal test? Here are the pros and cons of each. But there is a problem. There are just not enough hours in a workday to discuss and act on all the guidelines. Suppose an American doctor wanted a gold star when seeing patients and followed all of the guidelines for preventive, chronic and acute disease care issued by well-known medical groups. That could require nearly 27 hours per day, a team of doctors wrote in a study last year for the Journal of General Internal Medicine. No one could actually...
