A COVID Survivor's Story - Josh Kurtz

Image
The U.S. is failing in the fight against COVID-19. States are setting new records for infections on a daily basis. Hospitals are approaching capacity. Reopenings are being rolled back. And PPE is again running scarce in some places. Recently Maryland Matters reporter Bruce DePuyt spoke with Sharrarne Morton, a 54-year-old Prince George's County resident who contracted coronavirus in March.   She survived, but only thanks to family members, who refused to leave her side, and her medical team. In a candid Q&A, Morton, who hosts a weekly business program on Sirius Radio, reflects on her harrowing experience, the debate about masks, and why people must remain vigilant, even as social distancing fatigue invariably intensifies. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity. – – – – – – – – Maryland Matters:  Do you remember the moment you started to feel bad?  Sharrarne Morton: &nbs...

Get Your Free Flu Vaccine Beginning Sept. 30 - Duke Today

Image
As the Duke community continues to do what it can to stay safe from COVID-19, it's now time to take a similar stance against annual influenza by getting vaccinated. The vaccination against flu is the best protection for colleagues, students, patients, visitors and loved ones. Consistent with this belief and Duke's core values, the flu vaccination will be required for Duke University staff and faculty working on-site to better protect our community from influenza in light of COVID-19. All faculty and staff in the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Duke University Health System are required to get the annual vaccination against the influenza each year. "The double-whammy of flu and COVID occurring is a bad situation," said Dr. Carol Epling, director of Duke Employee Occupational Health and Wellness (EOHW). "We want people to be as immune as they can be. If people get the flu vaccine, their body is prepared to avoid a very sever...

Planned Parenthood receives Title X grant for funding preventative, family healthcare - KWTX

WACO, Texas (KWTX) -Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas has been approved for a five year Title X grant. For about 50 years, Title X family planning clinics have had a goal of providing access to family planning and preventive health services for millions of low-income or uninsured people. However, there has not been a Title X provider in Waco for several years. The Planned Parenthood Waco Health Center says with the return of the grant, they are now the only Title X provider in Waco. "Our patients who are coming in seeking birth control, STI screening, preventative care visits such as breast cancer screenings and cervical cancer screenings are now able to come in and be screened for our Title X grant," Tonya Capson, Health Services Regional Director, said. With funding from the grant, the Waco center is expecting to lend a helping hand to thousands of underserved and uninsured patients in the upcoming year. For patients faced with poverty, services can be provided free of ch...
