Flu or Omicron? Diagnosis Must be Done Quickly - Infection Control Today

Image
The highly transmissible and dominant Omicron variant of COVID-19 places added pressure on infection preventionists and other clinicians to determine just what they're dealing with. As the Omicron variant of COVID-19 surges to record-breaking levels in the United States in terms of infections and hospitalizations it might be easy for the public to overlook that influenza has also spiked in recent weeks. The flu spike seems to have slowed in the last 2 weeks (see chart below) according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but not enough so that infection preventionists and other health care professionals don't have to deal with the muddle of possible coinfection. Does the patient presenting with respiratory problems have influenza or 1 of the COVID-19 variants? Perhaps it's just the common cold or allergies? Being able to interpret early signs of disease is vital toward taking necessary steps to recovery and mitigation—receiving laboratory or at-home test...

Pre-departure Covid-19 test prices a 'rip off', Taranaki traveller says - Stuff.co.nz

VANESSA LAURIE/Stuff Amanda Bruning was shocked at what she was charged for a Covid-19 pre-departure test in New Plymouth. A New Plymouth woman heading to Melbourne says she feels "ripped off" by the cost of a Covid pre-departure test in Taranaki. Amanda Bruning, who has been working in New Plymouth for the past seven months, has to return to Melbourne on Saturday for personal reasons. Before she does, she needs to present evidence of a negative Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test taken within three days of her flight's scheduled departure. The Government covers the costs of community Covid testing, making them free to the public. However, travellers have to pay for their own. While she was more than happy to comply, Bruning said she was shocked at what she was going to be charged by New Plymouth medical centres for the test. A search of the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) for 2019 using "flu" as the vax type and "influenza" as the vax name, recorded 12,061 adverse events following the influenza vaccine. In 2018, that number was 12,970. 1 Despite what was considered a high number of adverse events in 2019, the effectiveness of the vaccine has been questionable. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: 2 "While vaccine effectiveness (VE) can vary, recent studies show that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40% and 60% among the overall population during seasons when most circulating flu viruses are well-matched to those used to make flu vaccines." In other words, only in years when the vaccine is well-matched to most circulating viruses will the shot afford protection for 40% to 60% of the overall population. This flu season doesn't meet the criteria and so we can expect a low rate of protection in the ove...
