Prevention and Control of Seasonal Influenza with Vaccines ... - CDC

Recommendations for the Use of Influenza Vaccines, 2023–24 Groups Recommended for Vaccination Routine annual influenza vaccination of all persons aged ≥6 months who do not have contraindications continues to be recommended. Influenza vaccines expected to be available for the 2023–24 season, their age indications, and their presentations are described (Table 1). Available influenza vaccines and age indications are expected to be similar to those of the 2022–23 season. Recommendations regarding timing of vaccination, considerations for specific populations, the use of specific vaccines, and contraindications and precautions are summarized in the sections that follow. Timing of Vaccination Because timing of the onset, peak, and decline of influenza activity varies the ideal time to start vaccinating cannot be predicted each season. Decisions about timing necessitate balancing considerations regarding this unpredictability of the influenza season, possible waning of vaccine-induced...

Innovative COVID-19 test prototype uses bioluminescence for speedier results - News-Medical.Net

Image
In a recent study published in ACS Central Science , researchers used a luciferase-independent luminescence test to investigate whether the wild-type severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike (S) protein possesses pseudo-luciferase activity for Cypridina luciferin. Study: Pseudo-Luciferase Activity of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein for Cypridina Luciferin. Image Credit: Myriam B/Shutterstock.com Background Luciferin (luminescent substrate) and luciferase (enzyme) are crucial for bioluminescence (BL) detection, allowing for highly selective luminescence detection of target proteins and cells. Imidazopyrazinone-type (IPT) luciferin is found in many marine species, whereas Cypridina luciferase catalyzes Cypridina luciferin and coelenterazine (CTZ). Luciferin emits light in luciferase presence, although it can react with non-luciferase proteins or other biomolecules. A recent study showed that the CTZ derivative HuLumino can quantitatively dete...

U.S. health officials confirm four new bird flu cases in Colorado poultry workers - NBC News

Image
Four poultry workers in Colorado have been diagnosed with bird flu, health officials confirmed Sunday. The new cases bring the U.S. total to nine since the first human case of the current outbreak was detected in 2022, also in a Colorado poultry worker. Eight of the nine were reported this year. Their illnesses were relatively mild — reddened and irritated eyes and common respiratory infection symptoms like fever, chills, coughing, sore throat and runny nose. None were hospitalized, officials said. The other U.S. cases have also been mild. A fifth person with symptoms is undergoing testing, but those results are not back yet, officials said. The workers were culling poultry at a farm in northeast Colorado, according to state health officials. All had direct contact with infected birds. A bird flu virus has been spreading since 2020 among mammals — including dogs, cats, skunks, bears and even seals and porpoises — in scores of countries. Earl...

Bird Flu (H5N1) Explained: U.S. Human Infections Rise To 7 - Forbes

Image
Topline Here's the latest news about a global outbreak of H5N1 bird flu that started in 2020, and recently spread among cattle in U.S. states and marine mammals across the world, which has health officials closely monitoring it and experts concerned the virus could mutate and eventually spread to humans, where it has proven rare but deadly. Timeline July 12 Colorado authorities announced three workers in a commercial egg operation have presumptive positive cases of bird flu, bringing the state's count of known human infections up to as high as five—and the national number to seven—though authorities said none of the workers have been hospitalized, and showed "common respiratory infection symptoms" and pink eye. It's the first time multiple cases have been recorded at the same location. July 3 Colorado health officials confirmed the state's second human case of bird flu in a dairy farm worker who has since recovered and only had mi...
