Growing vaccine hesitancy fuels measles, chickenpox resurgence in ... - The Washington Post

A rapidly growing measles outbreak in Columbus, Ohio — largely involving unvaccinated children — is fueling concerns among health officials that more parent resistance to routine childhood immunizations will intensify a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases. Most of the 82 children infected so far are old enough to get the shots, but their parents chose not to do so, officials said, resulting in the country's largest outbreak of the highly infectious pathogen this year. The Ohio outbreak, which began in November, comes at a time of heightened worry about the public health consequences of anti-vaccine sentiment, a long-standing problem that has led to drops in child immunization rates in pockets across the United States. The pandemic has magnified those concerns because of controversies and politicization around coronavirus vaccines and

have learned a lot about pandemics in the last four years, yet there is still a lot more to learn. The way these viruses from various pandemics are transmitted has changed over the years, and thankfully, the death count has dropped. Since water supplies have been sanitized and basic hygiene precautions are now understood, modern pandemics jump from animal populations to human ones. Animals have long been the primary cause of pandemics; the infamous Black Death, which struck Europe in the 14th century and again in the 17th, resulted in enormous death tolls worldwide due to fleas that rode on shipboard rats. This pandemic was caused by a variation of Influenzavirus A (subtype H1N1), and the last crisis occurred 11 years ago in 2009, although there had been other influenza A pandemics in previous periods. The newly discovered influenza A (H1N1) virus is a new subtype of influenza virus that is transmitted to humans and contains genes from swine, avian and human influenza viruses in a com

Image
Nearly three years into the COVID-19 pandemic, gathering with friends and family again has become important for many Americans, but the U.S. faces a dangerous "tripledemic" of the flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19 going into the holiday season. While there is no vaccine for RSV yet, there are safe and effective vaccines for flu and COVID-19 that can make congregating safer and can help prevent thousands of deaths from the two diseases over the coming months. Even so, some patients are unsure, or maybe just lukewarm, about getting them. Virtual primary care requires that doctors be consistently available for providing ongoing care to their patients. Can doctors who meet their patients via video form an effective doctor-patient relationship, and does that relationship lead to appropriate and needed primary care? The answer is a resounding "yes" on both counts. Many people still believe that doctors must perform hands-on physical examinations in the office to deliver effective primary care. Some have gone so far as to say that "telemedicine is not medicine" and to assert that even when a physical examination is not needed, telemedicine is still ineffective — "Medicine … cannot be practiced through a screen between a doctor and a patient." Both clinical experience over the past decade and more recently publi
