In Costa Rica, the risk of getting infected with respiratory diseases such as influenza increases during rainy and cold seasons, according to the Pan American Health Organization. "The virus loves to live in cool conditions and where there is moisture. This leads us to a skyrocketing of people hospitalized for influenza during rainy seasons," said the head of La Botica Pharmacy, Jose Carlos Vargas. Although everyone should get vaccinated for influenza once a year, children are considered a group that is vulnerable to virus infections, according to Vargas. "It's very important that children between 6 months and 5 years old are able to receive the vaccine, since at these ages, their body and immune system are not yet mature enough," La Botica pharmacy said in a press release. Evaluating the Safety in Hepatitis B Vaccines - Contagionlive.com

Image
According to a study conducted last year, the number of Americans and foreign born people living in the United States estimated to have chronic hepatitis B is 2.4 million. 1 In addition to a large number of people living with the virus, it continues to be a challenging patient group. "They serve as a reservoir of infection for other people, but they also have substantial long-term morbidity including death," Bradley Ackerson, MD, FAAP, FIDSA, pediatric infectious disease specialist at Kaiser Permanente, Southern California (KPSC), said in an interview. Ackerson says that while traditionally the transmission was from mother to child, that has subsided greatly and now the majority of cases are amongst adults. And while vaccination can be effective, utility rates for vaccines is low. According to Ackerson, it is only around 30% in adults and only 42% in high-risk adults. One of the challenges is that people do not get all the required doses. The HepB-alum vaccine (Engerix-B; Gla

Family mourns death of Yale doctor, professor Barry Zaret - New Haven Register

WOODBRIDGE — Dr. Barry Zaret helped shape the understanding of how blood flows in the heart that saved countless lives. While he worked hard, he balanced his life between his medical career and his love for literature. Barry Zaret, 82 and of Woodbridge, was traveling southbound on Route 8 when the car suddenly veered onto the median. The car then traveled over a dirt mound and struck a metal guardrail before plummeting off the overpass above Winthrop Street, crashing into a concrete wall, according to state police. He was pronounced dead at the scene. "While it ended way too short, it was a very, very, very well lived life," Elliot Zaret said. "And I mean, that's always shaped me in how I approach my life." Barry Zaret was the former chief of cardiology at Yale New Haven Hospital and a professor emeritus of internal medicine at Yale University's School of Medici

Cyclotron for State's First Proton Center Arrives at UAMS | Arkansas Children's - archildrens.org

LITTLE ROCK — Completion of a $65 million expanded University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Radiation Oncology Center that will house Arkansas' first Proton Center marked an important milestone Oct. 20 with the arrival and installation of the Proton Center's cyclotron, a type of particle accelerator that serves as a key piece of equipment. "UAMS is proud to partner with Arkansas Children's, Baptist Health and Proton International to bring this groundbreaking technology to Arkansas," said UAMS Chancellor Cam Patterson, M.D., MBA. "Arkansans will no longer need to travel out of state to receive this innovative treatment." Under construction at 3900 W. Capitol Ave., the Proton Center of Arkansas will offer an advanced form of radiation treatment that uses precisely focused protons to target tumors, rather than photons used in standard X-ray radiation. While both forms of radiation kill cancer cells, proton radiation is more effective in trea

Palomar Health Top Staff Has Favorites in Board Elections – As Does the Founder of its New Medical Group - Voice of San Diego

Image
More than a year after the Palomar Health District board of directors abruptly switched the medical group that provides Palomar Health's doctors, the hospital district's top staff and the new medical group's founder are chipping in campaign donations to support members of the board majority that approved the deal.  Palomar Health is a public healthcare district that operates Palomar Medical Center in Escondido and Pomerado Hospital in Poway. It's governed by a seven-member board of directors that is elected by the public.   Last year, Palomar Health's board of directors approved a new three-year contract with Emergent Medical Associates (EMA) and its subsidiary, Benchmark, to provide emergency physicians, hospitalists, intensivists and other staff for its hospitals in Escondido and Poway.  Hospitalists specialize in caring for hospitalized patients, and intensivists are physicians who focus on critically ill patients

Flu season in the US hasn't been this bad this early in more than a decade. Now is the time to get a flu shot - CNN

Image
CNN  —  Flu season has ramped up early in the United States, and flu hospitalizations are worse than usual for this time of year, according to data published Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's been more than a decade – since the H1N1 swine flu pandemic – since flu hospitalization rates have been this high at this point in the season. The CDC estimates that there have been at least 880,000 illnesses, nearly 7,000 hospitalizations and 360 deaths from flu in the US this season. The first pediatric death in the country was reported this week. Getting the flu shot is still the best way to protect yourself, experts say. And the best time to do it is now. A rise in patients awaiting long-term care beds is crowding Vermont’s ERs - vtdigger.org

Data shows that Vermonters are sitting in hospital beds because they can't find subacute care. Hospital officials say the trend is straining their emergency departments. File photo by Glenn Russell/VTDigger On Friday, the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington issued a warning to Vermonters: Don't visit our emergency department if you can avoid it.  Instead, it advised people with relatively minor issues to seek treatment at doctor's offices or urgent care centers rather than visit the hospital's overcrowded emergency room.  Stephen Leffler, president of the medical center, said the overcrowding was caused by a "perfect storm" of several health care trends condensed into a single day: More than 100 patients sought care on Friday, but the facility had only 53 staffed beds. "It's back to normal-busy now and we're managing OK, but Friday was particularly stressful and difficult," he

Campus community detect abnormal number of dead birds, suspect avian influenza - The Michigan Daily

Image
When LSA sophomore Kimberley Thompson returned to campus at the start of the school year, she said she noticed something she had never before: an abnormally large number of dead birds. "I remember seeing (the birds) and being sad because they were all these different colors," Thompson said. "They were pretty, colorful birds." Thompson said she saw these birds lying on the ground each day between the Hatcher Graduate and Shapiro Undergraduate Libraries. LSA senior Sandhya Srinivasan also noticed an increase in dead birds on campus in the past few weeks. She said a group of students in Martha Cook residence hall theorized that an emerging avian influenza outbreak could be the cause of the increase in bird deaths. "Someone mentioned (the avian flu) in the Martha Cook group chat, and I mentioned that I happened to see these dead birds too," Srinivasan said. However, reports from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirm that Washte

KIRBYVILLE — When Shelly Huffman stepped onto a 40-foot bus on Monday afternoon, she wasn't looking for public transportation. She needed a checkup. The 52-year-old had recently been diagnosed with depression and high blood pressure, which runs in her family. Without health insurance, Huffman could no longer afford to see a doctor to help manage her hypertension. This mobile medical unit, parked behind a community center in the rural East Texas town of Kirbyville, had become a lifesaver. "I like the people here, and it's affordable care," Huffman said. Her white T-shirt read "I love pickup trucks and rock and roll." Inside the mobile bus — equipped with medical supplies such as gloves, tourniquets and blood pressure monitors — a nurse practitioner named A
